Why Has Your Gas Furnace, Boiler or Fireplace Been “Red Tagged?”
When a licensed gas technician identifies a furnace, boiler, fireplace, hot water tank, or another gas appliance as unsafe or potentially unsafe, they are required by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (T.S.S.A.) to issue a “red tag.”
The tag is a common format provided by the T.S.S.A., but other documents with the same details are acceptable as well.
A red tag can result from various issues, including problems with the appliance itself, venting (chimney), gas piping, or electrical wiring. Any part of the system that violates the gas code can be the reason for a red tag.
Types of Red Tags
There are two categories of red tags that a technician can issue:
- Type A: Issued when the condition poses an immediate danger. In this case, the gas supply to the appliance is shut off immediately, and the appliance cannot be used under any circumstances.
- Type B: Issued when the condition is less urgent but still requires corrective action to address a potential safety concern. The technician will specify the timeframe for resolution, up to a maximum of 90 days.
In both cases, the utility provider must be informed of the red tag. Once the required repairs are completed, a licensed technician must update, sign the tag, and notify the utility to clear it.
What Happens If You Don’t Address the Red Tag?
If the utility company is not notified within the allotted time, they will begin the process of shutting off and locking the gas meter.
Protect Yourself from Improper Red Tags
Sadly, there are cases where dishonest operators issue red tags unnecessarily to pressure homeowners into purchasing a new appliance.
If you’re unsure about the validity of your red tag, we offer a FREE INSPECTION to provide an honest second opinion.
- If no issues are found, we will remove the tag and inform the utility that it has been resolved.
- If the tag is valid, we’ll explain your options and provide a no-obligation quote for the necessary repairs.
In either scenario, the inspection is completely free of charge.
